I just finished Breakneck and enjoyed it! Not sure if I'm completely convinced by the theory, but it's a great read.
I've got to fact-check Dan's One-Child Policy claims though.
Firstly, the communist party doesn't claim that the OCP prevented 400m births. The phrase "计划生育40余年, 我国少生4亿多人" (from early 2010s) refers to family planning starting in the 1970s. Just looking at a graph makes it clear that 1970-1979 was the major "shock" period for China's demographic collapse.
Second, the demographics of the one-child policy are pretty simple if you actually take a bit of time to think through them - it's better understood as a continuation of the 1970s policies, relaxing some areas (mainly marriage age), but tightening others (e.g. urban birth rates).
