Very interesting article. Many times I only skim because your articles are on the long side, but this time I read through as it was very enlightening.

Interesting about how people find Trump so different and really very enjoyable when they are in private with him and his family.

Last I heard say this was Bill Maher on his show? Interesting.

Two things jumped out at me: Taniguchi's worry about the strength of direction going forward, and Japanese people's declining opinion of China.

One wonders about leadership as the baby boomers finally, slowly move off-stage. What happens in the aftermath of Xi? Of Trump? Power struggles going forward? Whither capitalism?

What gives Japan an edge in the future?

The last time I was in Japan (2019) I stayed in a hostel in Asakusa. Plenty of Chinese tourists. Conversed with a young aspiring Chinese photographer at breakfast, very expensive camera, very positive feelings about Japan. Public info texts now in Chinese and Korean as well as English. Asia pulling together? Or not?

I find it highly alarming that Trump wasn't aware of the Russo-Japanese War and it's outcome. What other historical context is he missing?

I'm not so sure. I'm pretty sure I was taught the spark notes of it in high school US or European history.
